Welcome to the ETF survey on driver fatigue in European road transport

The ETF survey on driver fatigue in European is being conducted in the frame of the EU-funded project “Trade unions and drivers for safer roads in Europe”. The purpose of the project is to build capacity among the ETF member organisations to address driver fatigue in passenger and freight road transport. Further information about the project are available on the ETF website.

This survey aims to improve the knowledge about driver fatigue among European bus, coach and truck drivers to identify and address causes and impacts of drivers fatigue and preventive measures against it.

Driver fatigue is not “part of the job”. On the contrary, it consists of mental and physical fatigue as well as drowsiness, tiredness and sleepiness. Signs of driver fatigue are yawning, difficulty keeping the eyes open, difficulty concentrating among others. Driver fatigue leads to an increased tendency to mentally withdraw from driving tasks and a deterioration of driving performance manifesting itself in slower reaction time, reduced attention, a higher rate of lane crossings and the overall ability of the drivers to control their vehicle.

The survey covers aspects of fatigue among truck drivers, coach drivers and bus drivers, that travel long distances or work long working hours (e.g. more than 8 hours a day). However, the survey does not cover urban public transport.

Please do not participate if you do not meet these selection criteria. Please only answer the questions from the perspective of your work-related driving – and not, for example, when driving your own personal car in your free time.

By filling in the online questionnaire, you allow the ETF and our contractor wmp consult to store and analyse the data. The information you provide will be treated strictly confidentially. It will only be used to gain more knowledge on driver fatigue in European road transport. The questionnaire does not ask you to disclose your name if you do not want to. However, our contractor would like to conduct a number of follow-up interviews in order to clarify information and assessments further and we would be pleased if you would provide us with your contact detail which will be treated as strictly confidential as well.

Filling out the questionnaire will require approx. 15 – 20 minutes.

Thank you for taking the time to participate in our survey.
